Mia Smith

Hello, My name is Mia Smith. I was born and raised in Galveston Texas where I attended Ball Preparatory Academy at Ball High School. In 2012, I graduated from high school with the inaugural class. When I was five years old, my mother was killed due to domestic violence. As a young child I didn’t understand the severity of the situation.

Once I started growing physically & mentally I began to understand that I had a huge part of my life missing. I was then raised by my maternal grandmother with my two siblings. Where we grew up in the church and I acknowledge and thank God for all of my success.

Before going off to school is when I was introduced to Warden Pittman, Pastor Valentine, and a few other members on the board of Breaking Chains Making Amends. At that moment, I knew I was in good hands for the entirety of my college career.

"Breaking Chains Making Amends and the members have been a true blessing to me, spiritually and financially."

BCMA offers full college scholarships to children who have incarcerated parents. BCMA recognizes that the actions of the parent does not negate the dreams and aspirations of their children. Breaking Chain Making Amends will also go into the jails & prisons to assist in the rehabilitation of the incarcerated. They are able to teach them life skills to better their chances of remaining free after they are released. The organization is able to mentor and provide life skill classes. I respect that the organization will reach the at risk youth in the community to prevent them from going down the wrong path and ending up in prison. BCMA also will offer scholarships to the children of victims of crimes.

Breaking Chains Making Amends and the members have been a true blessing to me, spiritually and financially. At anytime I was able to contact Warden Pittman personally with any problems I had with school.

Upon graduating high school, I continued my education at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. While at SHSU, I majored in Animal Science with a minor in Science. With the help of BCMA, I didn’t have to worry about my tuition and fees; I was able to enjoy my college years and join a numerous amount of organizations on campus. On May 13, 2017 I graduated with my bachelors of Science degree becoming a first generation college graduate. Now I’m working in my field at a Veterinary clinic helping animals and promoting public health.
